bethaltoThe Village of Bethalto was founded in 1834 before becoming incorporated in 1869. According to the village website,three words sum up the early history of Bethalto: grain, coal and trains. The first settlers in the area arrived in the early 19th century and found a land blessed with rich soil and various outcroppings of coal. The construction of the Alton-Terre Haute Railroad in the mid 1850s ensured Bethalto s destiny as a farming and mining center.
A tourist attraction in this quaint community is the Bethalto Village Hall. It was built in 1873 and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places over 100 years later in 1987. It is currently the oldest remaining city hall building in Madison County in Illinois.
The village has also become a sporting hotbed with its addition of several sports complexes and fields. Baseball and softball tournaments are held throughout the summer months. The village also has plans to add a disc golf course and other sporting amenities.
