Haunted Cruises on the Mississippi

Have you ever wanted to know why Alton, Ill., the city nicknamed the “Most Haunted Small Town in America,” is so haunted? Come on aboard one of the three haunted evening cruises on the Mississippi River this October to hear the ghoulish stories of Alton.

A sorted past of murder, war, death and destruction has led to Alton’s haunted present.  Through the years, many travelers have investigated and inquired about the unexplained happenings and psychic phenomena found throughout Alton.  Several locations that are noted to be extremely haunted, including the infamous McPike Mansion and Milton School, have been featured on television shows on the Travel Channel and Syfy Channel.

The newest haunted tour offered this year is a cruise on a 49-passenger excursion boat from Grafton River Adventures. This ghostly tour will last 90 minutes with a tour guide from Alton Haunted Odyssey pointing out haunted locations along the Mississippi River and providing details as to what makes Alton so haunted. Stories include traumatic events such as the murder of Elijah Lovejoy, the city being the home of the old prison that housed thousands of Confederate soldiers, Alton’s ties to Al Capone’s boat and more.

The three haunted cruises are scheduled on the nights of Thursday, Oct. 10, Friday, Oct. 11 and Saturday, Oct. 12. Boarding is at the Alton Marina beginning at 6 p.m. The boat will return to port at 8 p.m. Admission is $35 per person. To make reservations, call (800) 258-6645.

There will also be Fall Color Cruises available on those three dates at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Alton Haunted Odyssey also offers trolley tours to some of the most haunted sites in Alton, including the eerie McPike Mansion and the Confederate Cemetery, where not all the spirits are at rest. This year tours begin at My Just Desserts in the historic Ryder Building. For more information about trolley tours, visit AltonHauntedTours.com.

The excursion boat is an all-weather, 53-foot, 49-passenger Coast Guard licensed tour boat. There is seating and cafe tables on both the upper and the lower decks. The first level of the boat is fully enclosed with large windows and is seasonally air-conditioned and heated. The upper deck is a huge open air patio offering 360 degree views of the river, bluffs, islands and historical points of interest along the way, perfect to see all the haunted sites along the mighty Mississippi River.
